Introduction (Text Version):


The purpose of this short course is to introduce the concept of Augmented Reality as it applies to education. Learners will gain a strong foundational understanding of the history and development of augmented reality and how it can be implemented in K-12, post-secondary and adult learning environments – both in the classroom and online. They will also have a chance to consider some popular instructional design theories that work well with augmented reality based training.

By working through this course, participants will be able to reflect on how augmented reality can be incorporated into their own day-to-day practice – whether they are current full-time educators, working professionals or about to join either of these fields.

Participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate their new understanding of augmented reality in education by creating and sharing augmented reality-based lesson plans with their fellow learners. By engaging in this learning community and providing feedback to their peers, the learning experience will be enhanced and strengthened by drawing upon multiple different perspectives and interpretations of augmented reality in education.


Part 2: What is Covered in this Course?

During Week One…
During week one, learners will be introduced to the basic concepts augmented reality, as well as the history of its development from the 1950’s to present day. Next, several examples of implementations of this technology in education are provided, followed by a careful consideration of what augmented reality means for the online learning environment. Students will chose one of the implementation examples provided to summarize for their peers.

During Week Two…
In week two, participants will build upon their newfound knowledge of augmented reality to start looking at how augmented reality can bring an entirely new dimension to game-based learning. They will then choose an instructional design theory upon which to base a lesson plan that employs augmented reality technology for education.

During Week Three…
In week three, participants are given the opportunity to flesh out their lesson plans and provide feedback to their fellow peers’ plans.


Part 3: Assessment

During week one, participants will create a summary of one of the examples of augmented reality technology provided to them through the course.

During weeks two and three, learners will synthesize what they have learned about augmented reality based training to develop a lesson plan that can be adopted in their own professional setting. They will then have the opportunity to assess and provide feedback to each others plans.

Rubrics will be provided to participants at the beginning of the course to fully outline facilitator expectations.


Part 4: Monitoring / Support / Participant Questions (How does it all work?)

“Augmented Reality in Education” is delivered as a self-directed independent learning experience capable of adapting to any schedule. Participants can access this course and work through the material at their own pace – anytime, anywhere.

This course is fully supported through a carefully designed support strategy to ensure that no barriers impede learner progress at any point. Facilitators are fully available by email to answer any questions or assist students whenever required.
